Now What?

First of all, I'd like to thank everyone who volunteered for beta reading for me over the weekend!! I really appreciate it!!

Okay, now to business. First of all, I finished my book on Friday!! The one problem was, after I finished it, I had no idea what to do. Now, I'm not saying I didn't have a lot to do. In fact, I had an entire book to finish reading and all of book 2 to write. But, it felt wrong not having to work on my first book ever.

I found myself wandering around, pretending to re-read everything I'd written, but couldn't bring myself to focus. I think I was kind of in shock. How on earth do you recover after working your butt off for an entire year on a single novel? Of course, I've still got book 2 to write, but still...

What do you guys do after writing a novel? Do you take a break or just jump into the next project?

I jump in to the next project, which is usually something entirely different.

Take a break. At least two weeks and it'll be rough, but it'll be so great for you. I had my hubs zip the folder so I wasn't tempted to look at it. Then when I finally got past the two week mark, he opened the file and I read it with fresh eyes and I was able to properly edit and focus.

In the meantime so you don't go crazy, read other books, dive into another wip if you feel ready, but taking a break from those particular characters would be a good idea. And do other things that will help take your mind off it. Go for a walk, hang out with some buds, go to the movies.

And read! Read, read, read :)

I have to take a break from my novel before I can even think about revising. Sometimes, I dive into a new project, but more often it's time to do the dishes and fold the laundry I haven't done in the final week of writing.

I def. take a break... need time to process and separate myself from the last project before moving on. I do other creative things that are NOT writing... like quilting, or painting... and I get outside!!!

Congrats on being finished :) Now I gotta hurry up and read it! :)

Well done on finishing your book! It's so exciting, isn't it?

After finishing my first book (and after I'd made sure I wrote a bit every single day), it felt so odd not writing about my characters anymore. I almost felt as though I'd lost some friends. I was very tempted to start on book 2, but decided to give myself a break. I think it helped, particularly with plotting for book 2, and also with the initial round of rewrites of book 1.

Fairbetty~ Okay, I'll go play my violin or something!! I hope you enjoy the book!

C D Meetens~ Thanks for stopping by! And finishing my editing of book one DEFINITELY helped me figure out book 2. So maybe I'll start something else before I hear back from beta readers??

First of all--congrats on finishing!! That's awesome!

Secondly--I know how you feel. Usually after I finish writing a draft of a book, I take a break and do something small to celebrate. Like watch an unusual amount of TV. >.<

Then I go jump right into the next book. I have trouble not working on something. I think once I finish the book I'm working on right now--the third in a trilogy--I'll be more lost than usual. Cause then I'll actually have to start on something COMPLETELY NEW.

Good luck editing and getting started on the next one!

In your case, your passion is writing.

Here is how it works for me with my passion, which is investing. I love doing anything and everything to do with investing - so much so that Grandpa would have to drag me out of my office to get me to do anything else that is not planned or scheduled. I admit it - I am a workaholic.

Take a break? Well, here is my take on breaks. Take advantage of the time with "nothing to do" and create a list of other things that need to get done. And get them done one after another. Make sure to include on the list a time to chill out; we, humans, need it every so often. When having completed the list, tackle the next big project.

Actually, I have a list of everything that's important to me and want to get done - starting from my life mission, to 10-year goals, to 5-year goals, to annual goals, to monthly goals, to weekly goals, and to daily activities. Never a dull moment!

Taking a break with family members and REALLY ENJOYING their company every so often is spelled out as one of my goals, too, because family is VERY important to me. And I learned a long time ago that what gets written down gets done.

That's how it works for me with everything I do, including taking breaks.
